I am from India and I got introduced to Rugby randomly through RUclips in 2021. I didn't know anything about Rugby like most Indians. Lemme give my opinions to make this game more popular. First reduce the rules ....please. It took me literally months of weekends and holidays to understand the game of rugby ...months. While sports like tennis and cricket are also complicated , one enjoy these sports even without knowing these rules. But that's not the case with rugby. You don't know why penalty was given most of the time which is really frustrating. 2. Reduce injuries and violence in sport. Hospital pass and Dump tackle and other ways of making game safe. One thing you didn't pick was almost all sports except hockey are comparatively safe , no- contact or atleast less impact sport. Lives are precious every where in the world but know that developing countries don't have high profile doctors and emergency treatment facilities at the back of one's call. 12:27

Great video but it is more based on the organization of southern teams it seems to be. In France, for instance, it is usually the nb. 8 who is the most powerful ball carrier and not the nb. 6. In the French national team, this is Alldritt, and the stronger player at the breakdown is the 6, Cros, while Ollivon the 7 is more of an attacking flanker.

Having been playing 6 & 7 for 7 years now. It wasn't easy in the beginning, since it's really physical a intimidating. But at some point you fall in love with the pure violence of those positions. And guys on your team look up to you for those bone crushing hits that can end the oppositions will to continue playing. But the physical toll isn't for everyone. Sofar I've broke my left wrist and orbital (head on the wrong side), at least 2 concussions and a torn meniscus.

Watching Ireland play the influence of RL is obvious. The handling and passing skills of all the Irish players is one reason for their success.Fancy when people compare unIon to league like chess to draughts. Farrel a top 'draughts' player and a reasonable 'chess 'player, only took up the game at 31,is probably the best 'chess' coach in the world.Union trying to assert intellectual superiority whereas the rules of union are so opaque that commentators are baffled by them and they are dependent on refs interpretation. Scrums and mauls are simply communal sumo wrestling!

This is the following reasons rugby will never be as popular as football in my opinion: #1 Gore While rugby isn't violent like boxing & wrestling, it is still a gorey sport compared to football. Obviously players get injuries in football but it is rare to see players be seen poring with blood, though Terry Butcher was an infamous example. You will see more players with nasty injuries in Rugby than in football which can be off-putting. #2 Too complicated While rugby isn't rocket science, the sport can be difficult to understand. Obviously the object of the game is easy enough to understand (scoring the most tries) but that's where the simplicity ends. Unlike football the gameplay isn't free flowing. The 'movement' stops with things like scrimmages and rucks. And the positions can be hard to understand like the roles of hookers, props etc. Unlike in football where all players bar the goalkeeper all pretty much have the same sort of skills like heading and shooting etc, the positions have their own unique skills and restrictions. For example hookers 'hook' the ball during rucks and the forwards chiefly take part in them and the backs do most of the running. #3 Rich sport While it's a myth rugby is a 'posh sport' as like other sports, anyone can can enjoy rugby. In fact many people who like football also follow rugby. However it is true that rugby is enjoyed more by the middle to upper class folk. For example most rugby players and fans have been to a private school instead of a normal school. And many rich celebrities such as JK Rowling & Ian Rankin enjoy the rugby. So while obviously average people also enjoy the sport, it is very popular with the richer people. #4 Limited countries Unlike football which is played almost everywhere, rugby is mostly glued to a portion of countries especially the commonwealth though there are others like France & Italy. Plus only a few countries or counties have rugby as the no.1 sport. For example rugby is the no.1 sport in New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji, Ireland & Wales. In others like Scotland, England, France, Italy & Argentina rugby is relegated to the second most popular sport though cricket is also popular in England. Similarly only certain areas in those countries is rugby more popular than football. For example Gloucester, Rugby where the sport was invented, Galashiels & southern France are where rugby is most popular. #5 Lack of spot light While Rugby is popular, it will never overtake football when it comes to world wide attention. For example because football is so popular, sports pages in the papers as well as internet and tv news mostly cover it. Rugby only gets attention every now and then. The FIFA World Cup attracts almost half of the world population while the rugby edition only gets about 500 million viewers.

Rugby League is my game (Working Class Northern Englishman). I do love Rugby Union too however its a shame that the people involved in the game are such a***holes. And i mean anyone from fans, players and administrators. They say Rugby Union is a game for everyone repeatedly yet in practice its a game for the self proclaimed "elite" and they consistently alienate those from working class backgrounds/different races.

8:40 tennis is like this in the netherlands, on a competition game you spend hours with your opponents and the home team prepares either lunch or diner, afterwards you often drink beers. Comming from footbal this was so nice.

The 6 nations needs to carry on, but go back to being the home nations for the sake of tradition. Then a European tournament needs to be created, a little like the european championship in football, if about half a century late. The home nations will compete in that too, of course. And other regions are free to host their own sub tournaments like the home nations. And since I'm daydreaming about things that will never happen, I'd love a UK team in European and World Cup tournaments (Lions minus Ireland, except players eligible for Northern Ireland of course). And reunite the codes while we're about it!

This is great but I think the Shaq example is a little unfair- he had a 10 year stretch where his lowest average season PPG was 26.2, and it took until his 15th season before he ever dropped below 20, while also being effective on defense and rebounding.

In New Zealand we have a 4 tier system of provincial rugby. The top 2 tiers compete in the NPC and are the only teams that feed the professional NZ Super Rugby teams with new players. Being a player in the bottom 2 tiers is pointless because you have no chance to be an All Black. Im in a 4th tier province so I gave up 10 years ago lol.
